這首歌的起源似乎跟1979年發生在聖地牙哥的校園槍擊案有關。

一如往常的星期一早上，一位16歲的女學生拿著來福槍走進校園，

瘋狂且無目的地對著校園裡進行無差別射擊；

結果造成兩個大人死亡、八個小孩跟一名警察受傷。

當她被逮捕後，警察問她為什麼這樣做，

她只是聳聳肩說「I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day. 」(我討厭星期一, 這讓它生動多了)

這位女學生後來被判決終身監禁。(網路上查到的消息，她似乎2009年就有機會可以假釋出獄。)
